in tandem

Octavia Art Gallery | Houston

July 14 – September 2, 2017

Opening Reception: July 14, 6-8pm

This summer, Octavia Art Gallery is pleased to present in tandem, an exhibition featuring three native Texan artists: Sara Carter, Georgia Carter Fox and Diana Greenberg.

Sara Carter’s Grounded 60 Series paintings are abstract narratives dealing with the cultural phenomena of the 1960s. Using paint to create tension between boundaries of color, Carter captures the frenetic energy of the era through loose, erratic gestures. Also included in the exhibition are works on paper from Carter’s Surface and Commotion series. In these series, Carter introduces a multitude of media to paper as a means to apply, practice and experience principals of order and beauty inherent in her oeuvre.

Carter was born in Houston, TX, and currently lives in Austin, TX. She received her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. She has exhibited in solo exhibitions at Graystone, San Francisco, CA, as well as in group exhibitions at Octavia Art Gallery, New Orleans, LA; the Monterey Museum of Art-La Mirada, Monterey, CA; and at the DiRosa, in Napa, CA, where her work is part of their permanent collection.

Georgia Carter Fox’s landscape drawings are process oriented, deliberate and detailed. Three drawings included in the exhibition, Panel 4, Panel 5 and Panel 7, reference grisaille - the French decorative wallpaper, popularized in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. For these drawings, Carter Fox digitally alters photos of grisaille wallpaper, re-drawing the new pixilated versions by hand with mechanical pencils, on handmade paper. In contrast, her newest canvases evoke a looser, joyful abandon into the realm of abstract expression and color field studies.

Carter Fox was born in Houston, TX, where she currently resides. She received her MFA in studio art at The University of Texas in Austin, TX, and her BFA in painting and drawing from California College of the Arts in San Francisco, CA. She has shown at David Shelton Gallery in Houston, TX; Maniac Gallery in Los Angeles, CA; amongst others in Oakland, CA and in the Houston area.

Diana Greenberg’s newest paintings continue her explorations in color and emotion, with nature and music serving as inspirational guides. Art Deco II (Walking Man) references the James Taylor song, Walking Man while Grasshopper, was influenced by both Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural sketches and the music of Sam Cooke. A pure study in color, Pontchartrain Hotel was inspired by a room the artist stayed in at the legendary Garden District hotel in New Orleans. Stating that the room had an intriguing color story, she was motivated to examine and experiment, to further a particular color exploration.

Greenberg was born in Dallas, TX, and currently lives in Austin, TX. She received her BBA from The University of Texas in Austin, TX. She has shown at Wally Workman Gallery, Austin, TX; The Contemporary, Austin, TX; Octavia Art Gallery, New Orleans, LA; the Geovinsky Gallery of Contemporary Art, Denver, CO; amongst others. Her work is included in the several corporate collections, including Memorial Sloan Kettering, Sabine Oil and Gas, The Fairmont Hotel in Scottsdale, AZ and the South Congress Hotel in Austin, TX.

The artists included in in tandem share similar principles in their explorations of shapes, colors, and forms found in nature. Though distinctly unique in their approaches, these artists share the intent to gratify our aesthetic senses. The pursuit of which results in works that are wholly independent from any original visual or inspirational references.
