Luisa Mesa

Luisa Mesa was born in Havana, Cuba, and earned her BFA at Florida International University, in Miami, where she currently lives and works. Mesa has exhibited her work in numerous venues both nationally and internationally. Her paintings and sculptures are a meditative process. Line, repetition and layering are fundamental in the work – every one of her pieces begins with a layer of repetitive drawing. New forms and shapes arise throughout this progression, while previously used ones morph and evolve. Mesa’s handling is intuitive and improvisational and she allows the process to dictate the course of each work. In her mixed media paintings, Mesa often incorporates digital imagery and photographs that have a personal and auto-biographical meaning. The inclusion of these images serves as a means through which the artist can explore certain relationships and places that are significant in her life.

From 2007 until 2011, Mesa was an Artist-in-Residence at the Art Center South Florida. Prior to this, she was Artist-in-Residence at The Bakehouse Art Complex in Wynwood, Florida.
