Biography
Joe Zammit-Lucia is a conceptual artist working with a photographic medium to explore issues relating to environmental and species conservation. He is one of the world’s leading animal portrait artists. He applies the approaches and techniques of formal human portraiture to develop unique ways of using animal portraiture to explore issues related to animal individuality and human-animal relations.
Exhibits
His work has been presented as solo exhibits in major public forums including, among others, United Nations Headquarters in New York, the National Museum of Natural History in Paris and private galleries in Europe and the USA. His images were exhibited in Venezia Immagine on the occasion of the Venice Biennale in 2007.
In November of 2008, photographer Joe Zammit-Lucia presented an exhibition of his animal portraits at Octavia Art Gallery, coinciding with Prospect 1 – the largest biennial of international contemporary art ever organized in the United States. All proceeds from this exhibit were donated to the Audubon Nature Institute in New Orleans.
In 2009 his work was the subject of an exhibit on species conservation at the United Nations Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.
Awards
Winner of the Honor of Distinction and multiple nominations in the Nature Category of the prestigious International Masters Cup, awarded second place in the International Photography Awards, a fourth place Honorable Mention and multiple nominations in the International Black and White Spider Awards, his work has appeared in international fine art photography magazines and is featured in The World’s Greatest Black and White Photography.
In 2008, Joe Zammit-Lucia’s photographic images became the public face of world conservation at the World Conservation Congress in Barcelona.
The artist is a British citizen living in Miami, New York and London. He is currently working with the Preservation Resource Center of New Orleans on a project designed to display the role of conservation in maintaining and enhancing the spirit of the city.
