In Rubén Alpizar's work, objective and fictitious elements are entwined with a surrealist tone. Alpízar's irreverent and exquisitely crafted paintings and sculptures reference (and sometimes depict) everyone from Hieronymus Bosch and Diego Velasquez to Andy Warhol and John Lennon, Rene Magritte, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera (bound by the neck), and a winged Leonardo crowned with a propeller.
Alpizar's work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions in Puerto Rico, Panama, Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Canada, United States, France and Spain. His works are in major collections such as the Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst, Aachen, Germany, the National Endowment for the Arts, Buenos Aires, Argentina, the Emperor of Japan, United Colors of Benetton, Havana , and others. He is a graduate of the Fine Arts School of Santiago de Cuba and the Superior Institute of Art in Havana. Alpizar is also a member of The Writer and Artists Union of Cuba (UNEAC).
