Luisa Mesa was born in Havana, Cuba, and earned her BFA (Magna Cum Laude) at FIU, in Miami, where she lives and works.
Mesa has exhibited her work in numerous venues and is included in several important collections, such as Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines’ Oasis of the Seas, Foley and Lardner, LLC and Pinnacle Housing Group, among others. From June 2007 until May 2011 Mesa was an Artist-in-Residence at Art Center South Florida. Prior to her residency at Art Center, Mesa was an Artist-in-Residence at The Bakehouse Art Complex in Wynwood, Florida. In August 2011 Mesa opened her new studio – Luisa Mesa Artspace – in the Bird Road Art District.
Luisa says her current body of work is a meditative process. Line, repetition and layering are fundamental in the work – every one of her pieces begins with a layer of repetitive drawing. New forms and shapes arise, while previously used ones morph and evolve. It is intuitive, and Luisa allows the process to dictate the course of each work. Most of the photographs that appear Luisa's work have personal meaning. Through these images she explores her relationships with certain individuals and places that are significant in my life. She digitally combines different imagery, generating ‘worlds’ remembered and imagined.
