Marc Chagall is known as one of the most successful artists of the 20th century. Born in 1887 to a poor Jewish family in Russia, Chagall painted in a style all his own, combining elements of Expressionism, Symbolism, Cubism, and other Modernist art movements.
Chagall painted with a variety of media such as oils, watercolors, and gouaches. His work also expanded to other forms of art including ceramics, mosaics, and stained glass. Chagall’s unique style is characterized by strong and often bright colors that portray the world with a dreamlike, non-realistic simplicity. Animals, workmen, lovers, and musicians often populate his figures. Many of Chagall’s paintings are influenced by his Jewish heritage, but he is also known for depicting themes from the Bible.
