Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Edward 'Bear' Miller started painting in high school. After graduating from Reed College and teaching history for more than ten years on the West Coast and in South America, Bear mustered the courage in 2009 to focus his energy on painting.
Bear approaches his subjects in the realist tradition of Gustave Courbet and George Bellows, but his work is consumed by a 21st century lamentation for the degraded state of the natural world and the reluctant part each of us plays in the unfolding tragedy. Bridges, ships, and human forms in nature serve as motifs for contemplating humanity’s notions of liberation and progress in light of the biosphere’s diminishing robustness. The tragic beauty of oil rigs, mining operations, and commercial fisheries are subjects that Bear Miller is currently exploring.
